Breaking Barriers Initiative
BBI seeks to strengthen our overarching mission to foster multicultural communication and engagement. BBI programs foster inter-class student engagement and communication and support for incoming students during their first semesters at NYU Shanghai, on campus and in the city at large. The Leadership Committee meets regularly with the Dean of Students and other members of the Student Life Team to shape and develop the three BBI programs: The Language Awareness Campaign encourages mindfulness and inclusiveness in the language choices we make. La Familia fosters communication across the NYU Global community by hosting networking events and cross Campus programming. Brothers and Sisters provides an opportunity for first and second-year students to support each other as they navigate academics and campus life and engage with the Shanghai community.
SILA brings students and professionals together to collaborate across cultures to positively impact the local community. The goal is to create small, scalable, high impact solutions to urban challenges in our local Shanghai community. Each year SILA hosts a conference, inviting professionals from the local community to collaborate with students in designing innovative approaches to the community’s must pressing issues. SILA (“connection” in Arabic) was founded by the students of NYU Abu Dhabi and adopted by the inaugural class of NYU Shanghai in the spring of 2014.
